Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to ask for your continued assistance in spreading the word on national scholarship opportunities for UCSB’s top undergraduate students, in all colleges. Faculty involvement has always been essential to our students’ success in national scholarship competitions, but it is even more critical in present times, when students have faced increased challenges in connecting with potential mentors and supporters.
In particular, we wish to highlight the following upcoming events of relevance to students:
UCSB National Scholarship "Meet the Recipients" Q&A
May 13, 10 AM - 11 AM
Zoom link: https://ucsb.zoom.us/j/86056164342
Join us for a chance to meet some of our recent UCSB National Scholarship recipients in a panel-style Q&A event. Students, faculty, and staff welcome. Bring questions, and join the Facebook Event Page for updates. This event is open to students, faculty, and staff.
Fulbright Scholarship Information Session
April 27, 4 PM - 5 PM
Registration: https://apply.iie.org/register/4.27MSI
Learn about the many exciting Fulbright opportunities around the world at this special event intended for students at Minority Serving Institutions such as UCSB.
Nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships of note with deadlines in the coming year include:
- Beinecke Scholarship (graduate school in HFA/SS disciplines)
- Boren Scholarship (language study abroad in critical regions)
- Carnegie Junior Fellows Program (policy research internship in DC)
- Fulbright Student Program (English Teaching Assistant or Open Study/Research programs abroad)
- Goldwater Scholarship (undergraduate STEM research)
- Knight-Hennessey Scholarship (graduate study and global leadership program at Stanford)
- Strauss Scholarship (scholarship & grant funding public service project)
- Truman Scholarship (public policy/service, graduate/professional school)
- Udall Scholarship (environment/conservancy, native health care, or tribal policy)
- Yenching Scholarship (graduate program in China)
We hope that you will share these unique scholarship and fellowship opportunities with qualified students, and encourage our most outstanding students to apply. Faculty efforts in identifying and supporting stellar applicants were critical in UCSB's recent success in 2020-21 competitions, where the campus had two Goldwater recipients and one Churchill recipient (see also the UCSB Current article). Recent recipients of other national scholarships can be found on our website.
Our successes have taught us that competitive applications require months of preparation, so it is critical for students to plan far in advance. Xaiojian Zhao, Associate Dean and Chair of the National Scholarships Faculty Selection Committee, and Nick Alward-Saxon, Executive Assistant to the AVC, assist in coordinating campus endorsements and can provide guidance to applicants.
Students who are interested in applying for a national scholarship should make an appointment to see Nick or Xiaojian by writing to: scholarships@ltsc.ucsb.edu
For detailed information on the nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships our office helps facilitate, see our website: http://duels.ucsb.edu/academics/scholarships/endorsement
We look forward to working with you and helping our students to achieve even greater success in national scholarship competitions.
