Dear Colleagues,

Here’s the IS update for week 8!

UC Library Search Update - How do I prepare for Melvyl’s Retirement?

UC Library Search will replace Melvyl and UCSB Library Search as the new unified UC-wide discovery tool on July 27, 2021. To help you prepare for Melvyl's retirement, review the answers to the following questions on the UC Library Search website

  • What will happen to my library account in Melvyl? Do I need to do anything? Do I need to turn books back in?
  • I have personal lists saved in Melvyl. What should I do to keep them?
  • What do I do with my saved searches in Melvyl?
  • What do I do about links or bookmarks to Melvyl records?

Call for Proposals: UCSB Teaching Symposium!

UCSB Engaging Teaching Symposium II: Looking Back to Move Forward

Dates: Wednesdays and Fridays Oct 6–22, 2021 (via Zoom, with in-person components)

Link to more information and application

During the past year, instructors and TAs have implemented new strategies for reaching learners, cultivating community, redesigning assessments, and more. The Engaging Teaching Symposium invites instructors and graduate students to submit talks, workshops, or other activities to engage others in reflecting on these activities: what we tried, what “worked” or “didn’t work,” and how it might inform our teaching in the upcoming quarters.

Blending and Flipping your Class into Fall: June 2, 3-4pm, PST

This year you've expanded your teaching skills in new (and sometimes time-consuming) ways! You've created lots of videos, found new ways of communicating with students, and used online assignments to keep students engaged and on-task. Now that UCSB will return to in-person classes, how can you remix your digital learning materials into a manageable, engaging, in-person Fall class?

In this flipped workshop, you'll work with Instructional Development and your peers to blend online and in-person instruction for your Fall course.
