******************************
Dear Colleagues,
The Instructional Support Team hopes that everyone is looking forward to a lively Fall quarter! In these waning days of summer, we have some updates about masking, upcoming workshops, and more.
Fall quarter courses and masking
There is currently no campus requirement to wear masks in the classroom, and faculty may not create such a requirement. If you are concerned about teaching unmasked students, you can:
- Remind students that masking is strongly recommended by the campus and the county public health officer (current as of August 2022).
- Choose to wear a mask while you teach. We recommend that if you wear a mask, you use a microphone. You can find out if your classroom is equipped with a microphone in advance. Locate your classroom and its equipment by searching the list of general assignment classrooms (note that most classes will be taught in one of these rooms) or department-controlled and LSIT classrooms. If your room does not have a microphone and you plan to teach wearing a mask, portable mics can be picked up from the Instructional Development Media Equipment Desk in 1160 Kerr Hall at the beginning of the quarter (effective 9/19/22, 9am-5pm every day).
- Adapt this sample language for syllabi or class: “While masks are not required, Santa Barbara County continues to recommend that masks be worn indoors. Free masks can be picked up at many locations around campus, including the UCEN Campus Store Customer Service Desk, the A.S. Pardall Center, and other locations around campus. Please respect one another’s choices regarding whether or not to wear masks."
Pre-Fall Teaching Workshops
Join us for interactive pre-Fall workshops focused on pedagogy and educational technologies. We encourage instructors and TAs to participate in these sessions, which run from Aug. 19-Sept. 20, to arrive prepared and relaxed to your first day of class. Don’t forget that you can learn more about Canvas in some of these workshops in preparation for the Fall 2023 conversion (and the option to use Canvas earlier than Fall ’23, too).
- Pedagogy: Course Design with UDL, Backward Design, Collaborative Learning in STEM, Boosting Participation, Assessments Students Appreciate and Teaching Troublesome Topics.
- Educational Technology: i>Clicker (polling), Gradescope, Eli (peer) Review, Nectir (IM+discussions), Canvas Basics and GauchoSpace.

Provided you have already set up MFA/Duo for use with other applications (e.g., Google Workspace, UCPath, Kronos, Student Health Services Patient Portal), there is nothing new you need to do.
If you have never used Duo or want additional information about MFA, please visit this website about using DUO for multi-factor authentication.
GauchoSpace End-of-Quarter Updates and Maintenance - GauchoSpace will be updated for end-of-quarter updates and maintenance on Friday, September 16 and will be unavailable from 6:00am to 2:00pm.
