Re: Announcement of co-Acting University Librarians

I am pleased to announce that effective February 1, 2010, Sherry DeDecker and Lucia Snowhill will be appointed as co-Acting University Librarians. They will overlap Brenda Johnson before Brenda’s departure for the Indiana University in mid-February. A Search Advisory Committee to assist us in finding a permanent University Librarian is currently being formed, and will be announced in the near future.

In her new role, Lucia will continue to oversee collection development and system-wide collaboration. She will be the Library’s representative to external organizations, including the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and the /Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC)/. In her new role, Sherry will continue to focus on the Library’s services operations. She will be the Library’s University Librarian representative to campus committees, including CLIIR [ex officio], the IT Board, ATPG, and the L&S Instructional Technology Enhancement Initiative Campus Coordinating Committee. Lucia and Sherry will share representation on the Deans Council, the Administrative Advisory Committee, the UC University Librarians Advisory Group, and Library development coordination.

Sherry DeDecker is currently Associate University Librarian, User and Instructional Services. She joined the UCSB Library in 1993 as collection manager for U.S. Government Information and Communication. Sherry created and supervised the Library Government Information Center, and was Head of the Library Information Services department. She has chaired several American Library Association committees and sponsored numerous educational workshops on accessing government information. She is active on the UC system-wide Heads of Library Public Services committee. She holds an MLS from the University of Michigan.

Lucia Snowhill is currently Associate University Librarian for Collection Development. She has been at the UCSB Library since 1978, with responsibilities over the years including reference, instruction and collection management for government information, political science and law and society. She has been Department Head for Government Publications, Social Sciences Collection Coordinator, and Department Head for Collection Development. Lucia represents the UCSB Library on the California Digital Library Joint Steering Committee for Shared Collections, the UC Collection Development Committee and the UC Libraries System-wide Operations and Planning Advisory Group. She has been active in the Librarians Association of the University of California, serving as system-wide President in 1997/98. She has held four terms as a non-Senate representative to the UCSB Academic Senate. She holds an MLS from USC. Throughout her career, she has been active in the American Library Association.

I am delighted that they have agreed to these new positions. The Libraries and the campus will be well served by them, and I look forward to working with them. Please join me in welcoming them and supporting them in their new roles.
