Dear Colleagues,

This week’s Instructional Support Team message previews new resources for Spring quarter courses, and includes a reminder to activate new Zoom features.

Syllabus Resources

In preparation for Spring Quarter, the Instructional Support Team has created resources and templates for Syllabus Preparation, Learning Outcomes, and Aligning Lecture and Section. Instructors should also enter their own course learning outcomes in the “Course Settings” block of GauchoSpace, which appears in the top right hand block of all GauchoSpace pages. If a course fulfills one or more GE areas, that will also be listed in the course block, along with a link to the GE outcomes that the course fulfills. Instructors can contact Linda Adler-Kassner (ladler@ucsb.edu) with any questions about course learning outcomes (including GE outcomes).

iClicker Cloud - FREE for students and instructors

UCSB has secured a campus license for iClicker Cloud, which makes it FREE for students and instructors to conduct real-time polling and Q&A in their courses. For teaching ideas, attend an iClicker webinar. For technical training, please visit the iClicker help pages, or set up a 1-1 session with the helpdesk.

New Zoom Features

a) Activate Zoom Live Transcripts/Closed Captioning in your Zoom account
If you haven’t done so, please enable live computer-generated transcription for class meetings and webinars. The Zoom live transcription service uses automatic speech recognition software, so names and other words may not be displayed correctly, and accents may produce less accurate results.

  1. Login to your Zoom Settings.
  2. Click “In Meeting (Advanced)”
  3. Toggle “Closed captioning” ON.
  4. Check the box for “Enable live transcription services to show transcript on the side panel in-meeting.” You can also allow users to save the transcription.
  5. Participants can hide subtitles or view the full transcript.
  6. The host must click “live transcript” at the bottom of the screen in order for participants to have access to the live transcript. Please also remind users that “live transcript” provides a recording of the meeting.

b) In-Meeting File Transfer - The In-meeting file transfer has been locked at UCSB since our Zoom engagement began due to the risk of zoom-bombing and cyber attacks.  Recent security updates to Zoom have made these attacks more difficult and less frequent. As a result, UCSB will unlock this feature. Meeting hosts who wish to enable this feature for their meetings can do so by signing into zoom here https://ucsb.zoom.us/profile/setting and going to user profile under Settings, In Meeting (Basic), and toggling File Transfer to “On.” For more information on how to use in-meeting file transfer, please refer to the document at   https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/209605493-In-meeting-file-transfer.

More next week! We hope you are well.
