This week’s news from the IS team includes the RISE (Reimagining Instruction for the Student Experience) 2021 call, news about GauchoSpace, and library updates.

RISE 2021 - Read the full call and apply today!

August 2-August 27 + additional consultation as desired

RISE 2021 will guide and support instructors to continue to think about instruction through student experiences and larger sociocultural contexts as we transition from remote emergency teaching to the next iteration of our courses. Institute participants will complete asynchronous activities and join optional synchronous sessions with colleagues, guided by facilitators, to build on experiences of the past year and explore new questions and ideas. Collectively, we will design and remix teaching to:

  • Incorporate equitable and antiracist curriculum and teaching practices
  • Develop meaningful assessments
  • Incorporate principles of Universal Design for Learning
  • Strengthen communities of learners
  • Structure in-person and asynchronous time with students
  • Design engaging GauchoSpace sites
  • + explore each other’s ideas!

Participants who complete the RISE requirements by September 4, 2021 will receive $1500 in summer funding.

Apply using this online form by June 18.

GauchoSpace Groups and Groupings: Groups in GauchoSpace can be helpful for grading and organization as well as to facilitate group projects. Forums can be used in conjunction with groups to facilitate section specific discussions for ease of grading by TAs.

This video goes over the main uses of Groups and Groupings in GauchoSpace. You can use groups to help make forums more engaging in a large course, streamline TA grading for their sections, or any other situation where you want to have students divided into smaller sections of a single larger group. You’ll find information about, manually creating groups and groupings, using the group choice activity, using the group members resource, and using groups for DSP accommodations

Library Undergraduate Research Award

Sponsor an undergraduate researcher for the annual UCSB Library Award for Undergraduate Research (LAUR)! LAUR recognizes students who produce a scholarly or creative work that makes expert and sophisticated use of the collections, resources, and services of the UCSB Library. Student applications are due April 30.

UC Library Search News

On July 27, 2021, UC Library Search will unite all UC campus libraries. Current UCSB students, staff, and faculty, will no longer need to log into UCSB Library Search, Melvyl, and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) separately to find the resources they need. It will be easier for users to see what they have borrowed, request extensions, and manage their account for all of their loans with a single login, saving the user time and effort.

We’ll be back with more next week!
