Re: Faculty invited to participate in UCSB Reads 2022

Dear Faculty,

Hopefully, by now you have heard the announcement of the UCSB Reads 2022 book selection: Exhalation, a collection of nine science fiction short stories by author Ted Chiang.

UCSB Library invites faculty from across the disciplines to incorporate the book into your 2022 winter or spring courses. Exhalation lends itself to teaching and programming around essential questions about human and animal life on earth, including free will, fate, bio, and environmental ethics, time travel, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.

The Library will provide free copies of the book to students enrolled in courses that assign all or part of the book.

The Library will also sponsor faculty talks, book discussions, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, and other programs on campus and in the community from January through May 2022. As dates are confirmed, event details will be added here. Please encourage your students to participate in UCSB Reads 2022.

On May 10, UCSB Reads will culminate with a free, in-person lecture by Ted Chiang in Campbell Hall. This public lecture is presented in partnership with UCSB Arts & Lectures.

If you wish to teach the book, participate in and/or organize UCSB Reads programming, please contact Alex Regan at UCSBReads@library.ucsb.edu.

Thank you.
