Dear Faculty,

Hopefully, by now you have heard the announcement of the UCSB Reads 2023 book selection: Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design by Charles Montgomery.

UCSB Library invites faculty from across the disciplines to incorporate the book into your 2023 winter or spring courses. The Library will provide free copies of the book to students enrolled in courses that assign all or part of the book.

Happy City lends itself to teaching and programming around essential and timely questions to do with our built environment, economic choices, transportation, climate change, affordable housing, social trust, accessibility, gentrification, communities and relationships, local government, activism, public health, personal happiness, and more.

The Library will be organizing faculty talks, book discussions, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, walking tours, and other programming on campus and in the community from January through May 2023. As dates are confirmed, event details will be added here.  Please encourage your students to attend these events.

In the spring quarter UCSB Reads will culminate with a free, in-person lecture by Charles Montgomery in Campbell Hall. This public lecture is presented in partnership with UCSB Arts & Lectures.

If you wish to request a review copy of the book or to participate in UCSB Reads programming, please contact Alex Regan at UCSBReads@library.ucsb.edu.

Thank you.
