Dana Mastro

Dana Mastro is the Acting Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and holds a professorship in the Department of Communication. She received her B.A. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles, her M.A. in Communication-Urban Studies from Michigan State University, and her Ph.D. in Communication from Michigan State University. She has received multiple campus and national-level teaching and mentoring awards, including the University Distinguished Teaching Award at UCSB. She is a fellow of the International Communication Association.  

Since joining UCSB, Mastro has served as: Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel for nearly 5 years, a position to which she will return upon the completion of her role as Acting EVCP; Associate Dean of the College of Creative Studies; Chair of the Senate Committee on Academic Personnel, which makes recommendations regarding academic personnel actions; and Vice-Chair of the Department of Communication. 

Mastro has published extensively on the psychological effects of media (e.g., television, film, social media) on audiences.  She is a sought-after expert and consultant for both media industry and advocacy organizations on questions pertaining to how, when, and under what circumstances media use influences beliefs about ourselves and others, as well as emotional responses to and behaviors toward different groups in society.

Among other past professional service, Mastro has chaired the Mass Communication Divisions of both the International Communication Association and the National Communication Association, as well as served on the editorial boards of the flagship journals in the field of communication.
