Dear Colleagues:

Associate Vice Chancellor John Talbott has decided to retire at the end of this academic year after five years as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel and forty-four years as a professor in the Department of History. We thank him for his thoughtful and energetic leadership of the office that oversees the appointment, advancement, and retention of our faculty.

AVC Talbott, who began his career at Princeton University, has a distinguished record of scholarship focusing on modern Europe, especially the history of France, and on war in modern times. He has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Mellon Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the UC President’s Faculty Research Fellowship in the Humanities program. In addition to his work as AVC, Jack Talbott’s extensive record of service at UCSB includes appointments as Chair of the Department of History and Chair and Vice Chair of the Committee on Academic Personnel. We are very grateful for his outstanding service and we wish him the very best.

After consultation with the Academic Senate and our administrative colleagues, we are pleased to announce the formation of an advisory search committee, to be chaired by Professor Andy Teel. The membership of the committee is listed below. We are grateful to our colleagues for their willingness to serve on this important committee. A description of the position follows this announcement.
