Below are brief updates from the Library. This regularly updated website describes Library services while the Library building is closed.

We look forward to being able to reopen the Library building. We will do that as soon as the campus is ready to reopen to our community beyond essential workers.

Introducing Lida Uziel
Lidia Uziel joined the Library (virtually) on April 13 as the Associate University Librarian for Research Resources and Scholarly Communication. Lidia received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Montreal and Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University, and her MA in Library Science from the University of Montreal. She began her career as a librarian at Yale University and since 2013 she has held several leadership positions at the Harvard College Library, serving most recently as Head of the Americas, Europe and Oceania Division. At UCSB, Lidia’s portfolio will include Content Management Services, Collection Strategies, Scholarly Communication, and Special Research Collections.

Scanning from print collections and course reserves
The Library has limited staff on site to scan from our collections and physical course reserves to support remote instruction.

Please submit your requests via our online Course Reserves system, adding any notes to specify which parts of a text you need and by when. For questions, contact cres@library.ucsb.edu

We have received questions about scanning textbooks. If the textbook was already placed on  Course Reserves before the Library closed, we can scan portions to support courses; we cannot digitize entire textbooks.

HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service
The HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) has opened up copyrighted material in the HathiTrust digital library to member institutions with copies of those items in their physical collections. Millions of digitized books available through HathiTrust that are also in UC libraries’ collections are now available online to UC students, faculty, and staff. See https://guides.library.ucsb.edu/COVID-19/hathitrust for more information.

Kanopy films
The Library will purchase Kanopy streaming licenses for individual films for all courses. Requests should be submitted by Faculty/Instructors via the Online Course Reserves System (ARES) (instructions).

Interlibrary loan
Electronic interlibrary loan requests (articles, some book chapters) continue to be processed. All Elsevier article requests continue to be fulfilled using a document supplier, typically within minutes to hours.

Book purchase requests
The Library is continuing to purchase materials - electronic and print. If you have requests, please contact your subject librarian. While print materials are not currently being received or processed, they will be added to our collection as soon as we are able to return to normal operations in the Library building.

Library Instruction
Librarians can provide online instructional assistance with Library resources and services through a variety of channels, including synchronous Zoom presentations, recorded lectures using GauchoCast, monitored discussion forums in GauchoSpace/Nectir, research guides for your course, and online office hours. To request online instructional support from a librarian, please use the Instruction Request Form.
