Re: | Fall 2020 Options for Instruction |
Given the uncertainties about the extent to which we will be able to welcome students back to campus and resume classroom teaching in the fall, we are asking departments to review their curricula and consider their options for instruction. The attached guidelines will facilitate planning for Fall 2020. After consulting with your faculty, please submit the appended spreadsheets indicating your proposed plan for each course in your Fall 2020 curriculum plan by Tuesday, May 26. Please list undergraduate and graduate courses separately. You may add or remove rows to the spreadsheet as the number of courses dictates. Completed spreadsheets should be sent to assistant deans for each College, Division, or School, as well as to Nick Alward-Saxon, Executive Assistant, AVC for Undergraduate Education at nick.alwardsaxon@ucsb.edu.
For each course requesting in person or a combination of in-person and online (or remote) instruction – i.e., for each course where instructors are requesting that a portion of the course be face-to-face – please provide a brief explanation of no more than 100 words per course justifying the request. Pedagogical considerations that can be used for this justification appear at the end of the attached memo; instructors should feel free to add their own explanations, as well. Logistical considerations related to public health guidelines also will be relevant.
Requests will be reviewed by the appropriate deans and considered in light of information from the Registrar’s office, as well as guidelines from UC Office of the President and local and state agencies. Note that no requests for in-person instruction can be considered until all requests have been submitted, at which point it will be possible to assess possible available spaces.
This will be an iterative process. Once we know departments’ plans and preferences, we will work with them to find solutions based on the logistics of classroom capacity and availability, as well as UC and public health policies.
Thank you for your cooperation.
