Re: Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel

We are writing to inform you that Associate Vice Chancellor Alison Butler has decided to return to full-time research and teaching after completing more than five years of dedicated and distinguished service overseeing Academic Personnel. She graciously agreed to extend her service for six months until January 1, 2021, because of the challenges facing the campus in the COVID-19 emergency.

We are very grateful to AVC Butler for her outstanding service. She has brought insight, good judgment, and conscientiousness to this important position, working closely with the Committee on Academic Personnel and the deans. In addition to her contributions to the merit and promotion system, she convened and chaired the Faculty Salary Equity Committee and oversaw changes in the Lecturer with Security of Employment series. During a period in which we significantly increased faculty recruitment, she made special efforts to support assistant professors through merit review and tenure and promotion workshops, as well as personal mentoring.

While fulfilling her administrative responsibilities, AVC Butler, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, exemplified the highest academic standards. She received the Inorganic Mechanisms Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry and both the Arthur C. Cope Scholars Award and the Alfred Bader Award in Bioinorganic or Bioorganic Chemistry from the American Chemical Society. She also was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

We have begun the process to search for AVC Butler’s successor. In consultation with the Academic Senate and our administrative colleagues, we are pleased to announce the formation of an advisory search committee, to be chaired by Professor Tresa Pollock. The membership of the committee is listed below. We are grateful to our colleagues for their willingness to serve on this important committee. A description of the position follows this announcement.

Thank you.
