Dear Faculty Colleagues,

I’m writing to solicit proposals for lower-division Honors Seminars in the L&S Honors Program, for Fall 2023.

Honors Seminars are INT 84 courses which are taught above the (Academic Senate) faculty’s regular workload. Faculty teaching Honors Seminars will receive $3,000 in research funds. An additional $300 will be provided for supplies and expenses associated with the seminar; any funds not spent on the course can be used as research funds.

Seminar topics may introduce a particular discipline, explore an area of professional interest, or provide important insight on a matter of contemporary concern. These 2-unit courses meet 20 hours a quarter. The structure of these twenty hours is up to you: they can meet once weekly for two hours for ten weeks, four hours weekly for five weeks, and so on. Classes can be on campus and classroom-based, or field-trip or field-work based. The maximum enrollment for Honors Seminars is 20 students.

The seminars provide an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to pursue areas of interest in a small class setting. The Honors students who take these seminars were either at the very top of the admission pool (entering), or have the highest GPAs at UCSB (continuing). Please consider applying to offer a lower-division Honors seminar this Fall 2023.
