Re:         UC Santa Barbara EAP Faculty Director

We are pleased to announce that Professor Fabio Rambelli has agreed to become the next Director of UC Santa Barbara’s Education Abroad Program (EAP), effective July 1, 2023. Professor Rambelli, who holds the International Shinto Foundation Endowed Chair, is a professor of Religious Studies and East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies. He is the current chair of Religious Studies and the former chair of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies. Between 2016 and 2018, he served as faculty director of the UCEAP Tokyo Study Center. Professor Rambelli’s main field of research and teaching is Japanese religion and cultural history, especially the Esoteric Buddhist tradition (mikkyõ) and the history of Shinto. We are grateful to the advisory search committee, the membership of which is listed below.

We would like to again thank Professor Juan Campo for his exemplary service as our campus EAP director for the last 13 years. Under Professor Campo’s leadership, UCSB EAP increased enrollment and maintained its status as a model in the University of California system. Professor Campo presided over the renewal of the program after the suspension of UCEAP programs during the pandemic, increasing campus enrollment to more than 950 participants this year. Among Professor Campo’s accomplishments was the establishment of scholarship opportunities for our EAP students, including the Freeman Foundation Internship program, which provides scholarships for students studying in East Asia, and the Griffiths Foundation EAP Scholarship program for students studying in Asia. We thank Juan for his dedicated service and his lasting contributions to our campus.

We look forward to working with Professor Rambelli and the excellent staff of our UCSB EAP program.
