The following is being sent on behalf of the UCSB Library

Dear Faculty and Researchers,
We are writing to share an important update concerning the UCSB Library’s microform collections. A recent preservation assessment has revealed that a significant portion of our general microform holdings has been affected by vinegar syndrome—a form of chemical deterioration that compromises acetate-based film and can endanger adjacent materials.
To preserve the long-term integrity of our collections and ensure continued access to these resources, we will begin removing the deteriorated microforms on June 17 and 18. This work will take place on the 2nd floor, Ocean Side, of the Library. While we will do our best to minimize disruption, some activity in the area may be noticeable during this time.
Please be assured that all unique, irreplaceable, and unaffected materials are being retained, and that digital access remains available for the majority of items designated for removal. These efforts are guided by a commitment to preserving scholarly resources while ensuring that research and teaching remain fully supported.
We appreciate your understanding as we carry out these necessary preservation measures. If you have any questions or would like additional information, we would be happy to discuss further.
Kind regards,
Chizu Morihara, Director of Collection Strategies, cmorihara@ucsb.edu
Lidia Uziel, Associate University Librarian for Research Resources and Scholarly Communication, uziel@ucsb.edu
