UCSB Library invites the campus and community to a panel discussion about the new exhibition Beyond The Wall: The Prison Art Resistance, which features creative works by incarcerated individuals. Exhibition curators and Underground Scholars Ryan “Flaco” Rising, Juan Bran-Gudiel, and Gilbert Murillo will talk about the inspiration for this exhibition and their work with the UC Underground Scholars “Behind the Wall” program. Moderated by Prof. Vickie Vértiz (UCSB Writing Program).

As artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning technologies continue to shape our future, it is critical that we understand the opportunities ahead of us, and avoid the perils. Prof. William Wang (Computer Science) will describe the key advances of AI in recent history, and outline the new challenges for building human-centered AI technologies, focusing on the issues of fairness, bias, transparency, and energy efficiency of AI algorithms.
Wang’s talk is presented in conjunction with UCSB Reads 2022. This year’s book is Exhalation by Ted Chiang, a collection of science fiction short stories that addresses essential questions about humanity and alternative realities.

UCSB Library will hand out free copies of the UCSB Reads 2022 book to UCSB students while supplies last. The 2022 selection is Exhalation: Stories, a collection of science fiction short stories by Ted Chiang.

These creative works were donated by currently imprisoned persons who participate in UC’s Underground Scholars “Behind the Wall” program. The program creates a pathway for incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and system impacted individuals to enter higher education.
