Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back to a bustling and full Spring quarter!

This term marks an important end. For the first time since March 2020, we are no longer operating under the umbrella of “emergency remote instruction” practices associated with the pandemic. You’ve seen evidence of this in messages from Senate Chair Scott and EVC Marshall outlining policies related to in-person instruction, masking, and more. Find Spring Quarter FAQs on KeepTeaching.  A few highlights:

  • Dual-mode teaching, sometimes called “live-streaming hybrid'' or “hyflex” teaching, is no longer permitted. This approach allows students to join your live class either in-person or online. Per the Academic Senate's 3/17/22 memo, live-streaming "is not allowed in Spring Quarter" as it "could result in some students receiving fully online instruction, for which our programs are not accredited."
  • Recording and sharing lectures is permitted. Per the Academic Senate's 3/17/22 memorandum, "classroom recordings must supplement rather than replace in-person instruction."
  • Starting Monday, April 4, masks became optional in classrooms.

New Collaborate Help Desk in the Library

Please let students know that there is now a Collaborate Help Desk on the first floor of the UCSB Library (next to the Circulation Desk). The Help Desk provides students assistance with

GauchoSpace Grading Best Practices:  Grading and ensuring that students can see their graded assignments in GauchoSpace can reduce emails and help students understand their progress through a course.
