DUO MFA for GauchoSpace and Canvas Coming September 12, 2022

On Monday September 12, 2022, multi-factor authentication (MFA) using DUO will be enabled for both campus learning management systems used for academic instruction, GauchoSpace and Canvas. Provided you have already set up MFA/Duo for use with other applications (e.g., Google Workspace, UCPath, Kronos, Student Health Services Patient Portal), there is nothing new you need to do.

Note that students will also be required to use multi-factor authentication using DUO to access GauchoSpace and Canvas sites. Students will receive instructions from the campus about how to authenticate/how to download and use DUO. The Instructional Support Team will provide more information about authentication that you can share with students in upcoming messages.

If you have never used Duo or want additional information about MFA, please visit this website about using DUO for multi-factor authentication.

GauchoSpace End-of-Quarter Updates and Maintenance - GauchoSpace will be updated for end-of-quarter updates and maintenance on Friday, September 16 and will be unavailable from 6:00am to 2:00pm.

Fall quarter courses and masking

There is currently no campus requirement to wear masks in the classroom, and faculty may not create such a requirement. If you are concerned about teaching unmasked students, you can:

  • Remind students that masking is strongly recommended by the campus and the county public health officer (current as of August 2022).
  • Choose to wear a mask while you teach. We recommend that if you wear a mask, you use a microphone. You can find out if your classroom is equipped with a microphone in advance. Locate your classroom and its equipment by searching the list of general assignment classrooms (note that most classes will be taught in one of these rooms) or department-controlled and LSIT classrooms. If your room does not have a microphone and you plan to teach wearing a mask, portable mics can be picked up from the Instructional Development Media Equipment Desk in 1160 Kerr Hall at the beginning of the quarter (effective 9/19/22, 9am-5pm every day).
  • Adapt this sample language for syllabi or class: “While masks are not required, Santa Barbara County continues to recommend that masks be worn indoors. Free masks can be picked up at many locations around campus, including the UCEN Campus Store Customer Service Desk, the A.S. Pardall Center, and other locations around campus. Please respect one another’s choices regarding whether or not to wear masks."
