Faculty participation has always been essential to our students’ success in national scholarship competitions, but it is even more critical as we emerge out of a pandemic where our students have faced increased challenges in connecting with potential mentors and participating in campus research and activities. We hope that you will continue to ask members of your department to review these unique scholarships and fellowships, and encourage our most outstanding and qualified students to apply.

Faculty efforts in identifying and supporting stellar applicants were critical in UCSB's success in recent competitions, with two Goldwater recipients and a Churchill recipient last year (2020-21), and another two Goldwater recipients and a Strauss recipient this year (2021-22). All recent recipients of nationally competitive scholarships can be found on our website.

We invite faculty with interest in taking a more active role in our campus selection process to write to Associate Dean Xiaojian Zhao <xiaojian@ucsb.edu>, chair of the selection committee, to inquire regarding potential service.

Nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships of note with deadlines in the coming year include:

Our successes have taught us that competitive applications require months of preparation, so it is critical for students to plan far in advance. Xaiojian Zhao, Associate Dean and Chair of the National Scholarships Faculty Selection Committee, and Nick Alward-Saxon, Executive Assistant to the AVC, assist in coordinating campus endorsements and can provide guidance to applicants.

Students who are interested in applying for a national scholarship should make an appointment to see Nick or Xiaojian by writing to: scholarships@ltsc.ucsb.edu

For detailed information on the many nationally competitive scholarships that require campus endorsement, see our website: http://duels.ucsb.edu/academics/scholarships/endorsement

We look forward to working with you and helping our students to achieve even greater success in national scholarship competitions.
