Re: Interim Dean of Extension

I am pleased to announce that Professor Robert York has agreed to serve as Interim Dean of Extension. As you know, Professor Michael Brown, current Dean of Extension, is moving to the UC Office of the President to become University of California Provost.

Until last month, Professor York was Director of the Technology Management Program in the College of Engineering. He directed TMP with distinction for seven years, a period of important growth for the program during which UC Santa Barbara’s first professional Master’s program was established, and a new doctoral program was approved. A Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as Technology Management, he also has served as Associate Dean for Professional Programs in the College of Engineering.

Professor York’s extensive campus service includes the Council on Planning and Budget and the Chancellor’s Coordinating Committee on Budget Strategy. His community service includes the South Coast Business and Technology Awards Steering Committee, the MIT Enterprise Forum, and the Goleta Entrepreneurial Magnet, as well as other local and regional entrepreneurial organizations. A Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Professor York specializes in RF/Wireless Electronics and Electromagnetics. Some of his patents have been listed among the “top-earning inventions” generating revenue for the University of California.

Chancellor Yang and I are grateful to Michael Brown for his exemplary service as Dean of Extension for the past eight years. Under his leadership, Extension generated surpluses, developed innovative curricula, and launched new international partnerships. We wish him the very best in his important new position. We welcome Interim Dean York, and look forward to working with him and the rest of the Extension staff.

Thank you.
