As we move toward Fall quarter, please join ID, CITRAL, UCSB faculty colleagues, and others for new workshops to prepare for fall remote teaching. Some workshops are synchronous, some asynchronous, and some a blend of both -- and all will be engaging and useful!

Zoom Enhancements - “Original Sound” Available Now and Breakout Room Flexibility Coming Soon
Performing arts and music teachers — enjoy crystal-clear, professional-grade sound for your virtual lessons and performances. This option in Advanced Audio will enhance “Original Sound” mode, allowing you to disable echo cancellation and post-processing and get rid of compression. Note: This mode will require a professional audio interface, microphone, and headphones to allow you to offer high-quality private lessons. You will also be able to stream group performances from the same physical location — with higher-quality audio than most streaming platforms!
Coming later in September, students will have the ability to select a breakout room and move between rooms. This allows even greater flexibility in the way you structure your small group learning. You can create themed breakout rooms or reading groups and invite students to move between them based on their interests in topics.
Core Router Migration: Our next scheduled migration will occur between 12:00 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2020.
Campus-Wide Power Outage: Southern California Edison (SCE) plans to shut off power to the main UCSB campus beginning Saturday evening, September 19, until Sunday afternoon, September 20.
To prepare for the outage, mitigate risks to on-campus equipment, and minimize staff on campus to maintain social distancing, please:
- Contact your local IT department to see how they plan to handle equipment (e.g., computers, printers, and servers) shutdown and power-up safely.
- Servers: Where are they? What are they connected to? Which applications do they support?
- Who is going to be on campus for the shutdown and power up?
- Will they need access to buildings, including ID badges?
- Are certain areas equipped with an alarm? Do staff need alarm codes or accompaniment to those areas?
- Which areas need extra safety and precaution, as they may be hazardous?
- Note what specialized/ancillary equipment will need attention, in addition to computers and printers, e.g., lab equipment.
- Verify your backup power source and replace batteries as needed. Most likely, this includes an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
