Dear Faculty & Lecturers,
I am happy to share that President Drake has issued the revised systemwide Copyright Ownership Policy. This revised policy is an update to UC’s 1992 policy and it reflects a long development process, starting with a working group study in 2013 and culminating in a recent round of full systemwide review.
As described in the issuance letter by President Drake, the revised policy aims to: expand the eligibility to own copyrights and clarify the pool of works eligible for copyright ownership; create a definition for “Significant University Resources” as a limitation on the University’s ownership; clarify copyright ownership for Graduate Students and the application of this policy for Represented (Union) Employees.
The full text of the policy is available at the UC Copyright Site and the Presidential Policies page, along with a set of Frequently Asked Questions.
UCSB faculty, students and library staff can refer to the UCSB Copyright and Fair Use Guide explaining UC’s policies regarding copyright. You can also reach out to your subject librarian with questions about the policy.
All the best wishes,
Lidia Uziel, Ph.D., MLIS
