UCSB is in the final phase of a transition of the learning management system used for instruction, moving from GauchoSpace to Canvas. This transition was first announced in a memo to the campus in June 2022, with regular follow-up communications to instructors and the campus throughout the academic year.
As planned, in Fall 2023 all courses that utilize the learning management system for instruction will utilize Canvas.
Course site creation in Canvas is available for individuals who are listed as instructors of record by accessing the UCSB Tools menu in Canvas. Students and TAs are added to Canvas when course sites are created, but a Canvas site needs to be published in order for students to receive notifications for announcements.
We offer several opportunities for online, synchronous training on using Canvas, the schedule for which can be found at this link.
Additionally, recordings of previous Canvas training sessions, other video tutorials, and help documentation can be found on our support website. Instructors who need additional assistance can schedule a one-on-one consultation by emailing help@collaborate.ucsb.edu
During Fall, GauchoSpace will no longer be available for instruction and will be decommissioned on December 1, 2023, at which time it will no longer be accessible. We are creating an administrative archive to house all GauchoSpace course materials dating back to Summer 2015, for future use in Canvas. If you wish to save a backup of other older courses from our archives so that they can be copied into Canvas in the future, please see these instructions.
Thank you,
The Instructional Support Team
